Check back for updates to Work Stations.
The Daily Five Work Stations
Read to Self: Whisper Phones- Students use the whisper phones provided in the classroom to whisper read a self-selected, just right book. This is a great way for students to work on their fluency
Read to Self: Reading Comprehension- Students complete a Reading Comprehension activity that correlates with the strategy we are working on during our Reading Focus Lessons. The Reading Comprehension actitivies come from a series of books called Focus. We also incorporate Reading Comprehenion games from LakeShore Learning as an activity students complete instead of a worksheet or do when they finish the worksheet activity. The worksheet activity is rotated every eight days and is kept in a magnetic paper holder up on the front board for the students.
Listen to Reading: Computers- Students go onto the computers and listen to books on the computer. We have Raz-Kids from Learning A to Z, so students listen or read books on that program and answer comprehension questions. Other resources include PM Readers, Tumblebooks and more.
Listen to Reading: Tapes or CDs- Students go to our Listening Station and listen and follow a book on tape or CD. There are a few different choices in a basket by the station. I rotate these choices when I switch the groups. There are chapter books and picture books available.
Word Work- Students work on Spelling or Grammar activities during this time. I have a cart that houses some different activity options that include the following: Boggle, Scrabble, Bananagrams, magnetic letters, alphabet noodles, play-doh for 3D words and sentence building cubes. Students can choose what to do during this station.
Work on Writing- Students are able to work on writing during this time. They can finish up anything from our Writing Workshop that they may want to or free write stories, letters, poems and more. Students can als work on their cursive handwriting.
Read to Someone- Students pair up or read in a group of three. The students take turns reading aloud using whisper voices. This is another station that can help with fluency.
Library or Word Work: Literacy Folders- Last year, we didn't have a set Library day, so I incorporated it into my work station time to allow students to select books from our LMC (Learning Media Center) during this time. This year we have a set day in the LMC, so the station will change to Word Work: Literacy Folders where the students will complete a specific Literacy Folder that focuses on a specific skill. The folders are rotated every eight days. The folders came from the book, Take To Your Seat Literacy Centers.
